CRAB AND SHRIMP DINNER REPORT February 19TH 2005

Another great turn out of helpers for the Crab Dinner. A total of 544 tickets for the 7:30 dinner were given out from a possible 588. A family death resulted in 20 tickets being returned unsold. Our early dinner sold 92 tickets and although 92 doesn’t seem like a lot, considering this was are first attempt at an early dinner, it went off without any problems.

I think that if we decide to try two dinners again next year, we should have a much better response. We hired bar tenders to take care of the drinks and for the most part, they did a good job. The next dinner chairperson needs to make sure that the bar tenders know not to charge the dinner helpers for their drinks. The band has also been rehired again for next years steak and shrimp dinner and the crab feed dinner. They started playing this time at exactly 9:00! Dinner was also started on time with one major problem. I had made a special effort to invited Monsignor O’Connor to the dinner to say grace. During the heat of the moment of not wanting to start the dinner late, I FORGOT all about Monsignor saying grace. I did apologized to him an hour later when I realized what I had done. We should also thank Rod at Elk Grove Funeral Home for their donation of the Wonderful large screen TV with VCR and DVD player and also Elk Grove Dairy Service for the use of his closed container trailer that Tony Duarte used to pick up the Crab and Shrimp.

2004/2005 New Years Eve Party

Wow! What a way to start the New Year! This Years party was well attended with 176 tickets picked up at the “Serving Table” and an estimated 20 who arrived latter to join us in our last meal of 2004. We had a great mix of friends and families attend with their children this year and it was great to see them all having fun with no apparent damage done to the hall or any ones health.

To my family and me, this was the perfect way to finish the old year and start the new one. The event started out on a wet note as the night before, the roof started leaking profoundly into the bar and dinning area. Julio Melo Jr. discovered the cause of the problem the next morning and himself along with Orlando Toste and Julio Melo Sr. spent several hours repairing and cleaning up the problem.
Estela Medeiros along with Mary Silva, Dee Madruga, Carol Lawrence, Rosemary Toste, Melissa Silveira, Michelle Silveira and her mother along with Antoinette Duarte, Naomi Silva were the ones responsible for the preparing of the Shrimp, beans and salads and decorating the hall. Justin Duarte, Tony Duarte, Joey Oliveira, both Julio Melo’s and Frank Souza helped hook up our new Double Oven that was used for the first time.
A special thank you to my son’s godfather Tony Duarte. What Courage from Tony to be standing out there in the pouring rain Barbequing the steaks. The sprit of the Holy Ghost must have descended on him! The meat was excellent and the shrimp’s were equally as good. I want to also thank George Goes, my son Stephen and Orlando Toste for covering in the bar and to thank Joe Madruga for standing guard at the door collecting money for the tickets. I also want to thank the Polish Group of about 12 people that attended our function and were very impressed with our “Family Style” Approach to the New Year. One of them told me “ We want to bring all of my sisters and brothers to your party next year if we are invited. This Party reminds of us of the way we celebrate in our homeland with all the children. This is great” then she said, “ Polish people and Portuguese people are very similar in the way they think of family first.”
