The Elk Grove Society of the Holy Ghost (S.E.S.) hosted their first
Portuguese Heritage Day celebration on September 29th 2007 at their
hall at 10428 E. Stockton Blvd. The day started off with a parade of
animals led by an old horse drawn milk wagon followed by several
donkeys carrying milk cans. Behind them were 4 teams of beautiful,
large red and white oxen pulling replica’s of wooden carts with wooden
wheels. As the parade approached the hall, you could hear the noisy
squeak from the wheels rubbing on the wood axles. The carts were all
decorated in the theme of a “Vindima” (grape harvest), they were
carrying wine barrels, an old wine press, harvest baskets and old
wooden farm implements all associated with the old country and the way
of life hundreds of years ago.
After
the parade, grapes that had been picked the day before were place into
2 small wood barrels. The first grape stompers were the 2007 Festa
Queen Jamie Farr and her side maids Melissa Wegner and Raelynn
Dittrich. Before they were allowed into the barrels, their feet had to
be washed and dried by an attendant. Next anyone who wanted to help
smash and mush the grapes took turns in the barrels. There were young
and old alike getting their feet washed only to get them stained with
grape juice. While this was going on, a few musicians had gathered and
started playing and singing some old “vindima” songs. It was fun to
watch!

The 2006 Thornton Festa weekend kicked off with a bang this year when George Rocha got Jerry Springer and his dancing partner Kym Johnson to stop by for a visit. The TV star and his partner are currently perfoming on ABC’s "Dancing With The Stars" dance competition (Tues/Wed Nights). Their dance this week is the Paso Doble, which is the "Dance of the Matador". He decided to do his homework and came to a real bullfight here in Thornton, CA.

Jerry and his partner spent some quality time with the fans after the fight and recorded some video clips for their TV show. With the "Jerry Jerry Jerry" chant roaring in the background we saw him take on a vicious bull….. calf.

The bullfights were very good this year, and we saw quite a few
close-calls with the bull fighters and the suicide squad. A few of the
bulls were a little stubborn at first, but eventually showed us why
they are fighting bulls.

The 2006 Pismo Beach Festa was held on August 19-20, 2006. The weather was beautiful and so was the parade. Now I know why there are so many people that make the trip to Pismo for this festa!
The parade was highlighted by a large variety of gown colors including pink, blue, red, cocoa, and yellow.
This was the first time I had been to the Pismo hall and I was impressed by the large number of people and the large capacity of the outdoor hall area. This new building must hold 1000 people.
The sopas was great, although I am not presonally a big fan of serving the bread and meat together in the same pan, as it tends to get a little messy trying to fish out the bread.
The parade route started at the pier, and ended at the St. Anthony’s church. The hall is down the road from the church about 2 miles. There was plenty of overflow parking at the hall.
If you have not attended this festa I would highly recommend it, and make it a nice weekend vacation.
